The POWER OF PEACE™ Podcast, Barbara Gaughen-Muller interviews founder of the Santa Barbara Human Rights Watch Chapter Victoria Riskin.

Victoria is a writer-producer and former president of the Writers Guild of America. In 2018 and 2019 Vicky was nominated for the Santa Barbara–UNA Peace Prize for her years of Human Rights Work. The United Nations is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2020 and is our global voice.

In this interview, Victoria says this anniversary presents a great opportunity to spread the word about human rights. Her familiarity with the history of the United Nations has deepened recently while writing a book about her family because her father Robert Riskin was a screenwriter who had created films for the United States government during World War II.

  • Listen to find out how her father’s movies about a vision of America with American and global values brought human rights into focus for her. His movie about the United Nations and the signing of the Charter was enlightening.  As you listen to her passion you’ll begin to understand why Human Rights are so important to her.
  • Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown mentioned that “When you listen to Vicky, you think she is describing a character from one of her father’s movies. She’s always upbeat about what’s going on in her life even after the disaster that struck her home in Montecito. She never complains and people are attracted to her sense of optimism.”
  • What does peace mean to this dedicated human rights activist? “Peace is not just something that happens. It is something that has to be worked at every single day and where there are tribal conflicts, there needs to be solutions. Where there’s corruption, it has to be rooted out. When people are frightened, they do terrible things. So part of our mission is to help people feel safer, protected, to have strong civil society and rule of law and courts that are fair and we must be working at that every single day when we go to the ballot box or when we express our voices, whether here or around the world.”

And finally, Victoria knows we shall have peace when we are taking care of our neighbors, at home, and around the world.
